A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, the historic capital city of the Czech Republic, Prague, is a photographer’s dream.
Not the gaudy, glittering destination that a place like Dubai promises, the so-called “City of a Hundred Spires” seems to emerge from a dusty old storybook instead—historic, refined, mysterious in the most intriguing of ways.
It will woo any lover of cityscapes, and that’s exactly what it did to photographer Marek Kijevský, who moved there shortly after his first visit.
“Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world,” he told us. “Not only for its hundreds of towers, churches, and museums, but also for its extensive historic centre, which contains many beautiful spots for photographers.”
Marek has lived in Prague for 7 years, but only recently (2 years ago) began exploring the city as a photographer, discovering all the hidden nooks, crannies, and crevices that visiting photographers may overlook or simply not take the time to seek out.
His favorite location, he tells us, is around Charles Bridge (1402) at the Vltava river. From there he’s captured images like the one above, and these below. Not surprisingly, these are also his most popular images of Prague:
But the bridge isn’t the only stunning location for photographers to explore. Sunrises and sunsets can be captured beautifully at different angles from the Old Town side and Lesser Town side behind the bridge as well.
“Very popular is famous Old Town Hall with the Prague Astronomical Clock located in Old Town,” he told us, “but I also like Church of St. Nicholas in the Lesser Town, the most beautiful Baroque church in Prague.”
The best sunrise shots, however, are to be found at Petrin hills where you get a view of the whole city he told us. And if you arrive there at night, you’ll capture Prague alight… a sight Marek describes as simply “extraordinary.”
Of course, a visit to Prague wouldn’t be complete without a few images of Prague Castle (St. Vitus Cathedral 930, built in 1344), which Marek says you can shoot beautifully from near Charles bridge, or by visiting the area around the castle itself.
“Simply put, there are a plenty of views and places to shoot in Prague,” says Marek. Fortunately for him, he has a whole life to capture these scenes in the right light and weather conditions, every season of the year.
