5 Simple Ways to Reduce Double Chin When Shooting Portraits

There’s little in portrait photography less flattering than a double chin. This concise video tutorial from the Koldunov Brothers demonstrates 5 techniques for reducing double chins, to significantly improve the portrait.

#1. Head Forward

The first method is to ask your model to stretch their forehead forward and down, which pulls the skin around the neck tight, creating a more flattering front-on portrait.

#2. Change the Pose

Shooting your subject from a slight angle can help reduce the appearance of the double chin by accentuating the jawline.

#3. Create a Shadow

This technique uses lighting to reduce the double chin. By raising the light above the subject, you will create a shadow below the chin, which hides the unflattering loose skin.

#4. Shoot From Above

Rather than shooting from straight-on, try shooting down at an angle towards the subject. This hides the double chin, creating a stronger and more angled jawline.

#5. Shoot From Close Range

By getting closer to your subject with a wider lens, you create distortion in the face, which can in some circumstances be more flattering. Don’t go overboard with this, as the effect can be unappealing if taken too far.
